February is a drag if you live in the northern hemisphere and you’re not a big fan of winter. If you’d rather wallow in the misery than fight it – my personal preference – than you can’t do better than writing to the music in Finch by Murder by Death. This is a concept album inspired by the Jeff Vandermeer book of the same name. It is a favorite for listening and writing during cold days and dark nights.
If one emotionally intense instrumental album isn’t enough for me, Watchmen: Volume 1 by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, pretty much anything by Dead Can Dance, and/or anything by Beats Antique will do the trick. Into the Trees by Zoe Keating is gorgeous and moody as well. World’s Collide by Apocalyptica is fantastically campy and full of inky darkness.
But of course, if it’s all getting to be too much and I need something to help me remember that spring will someday return, I will do what I always do. Close my eyes, turn off the lights, and listen to the etherial voice of The Joy Formidable’s Ritzy Bryan.
